Brain Games: Social Conformity

We can change the youth sport environment

Scientist Jonah Berger, Wharton, University of Pennsylvania explains social conformity and what is going on in the brain.

Given this insight, I do believe that we can improve the youth sport environment. Start with sharing the Yellow for Yelling card at games where your child is playing. Step away if a parent gets too emotional and start yelling. Slowly, the norm will be supportive behaviours rather than instructive or abusive.

Reed Maltbie, Raising Excellence

TEDx talk "Echoes Beyond the Game"

With nearly 30 years of experience as an educator/coach and two masters degrees, Coach Reed has a wealth of practical experience and scientific research that he draws on to help athletes, coaches, and parents find more effective ways to navigate the youth sport environment.

Since the release of this TEDx talk in 2015, he has become a trusted educator, advisor, and speaker to sports organizations all over the globe. I personally love when he is being geeky and break down the science and translate it into practical example of behaviors.

He has been a tremendous inspiration for and collaborator to the Yellow for Yelling. Listen also to "Off the Pitch with Active" episode #009
